Statement
he American method of manufacturing (the extensive use of interchangeable parts and mechanization for production) emerged in the 19th century, making America the leader of the pack. This approach was employed increasingly in various industries and by the 1950’s had been applied to the production of music. The girl groups of the 50’s and early 60’s were a formulaic product, created and marketed to a new consumer; the teenager. Exploiting their optimism and naiveté, a revolving door of young girls were fed through the airwaves into American homes. Creating a cult of pop culture under masses of teased hair, darkly painted eyes, and tight skirts the girl groups sold the youth of America notions of rebellious romantic love, and melodrama.
